Five Types of Wall Paints and Finishes

Having selected a new paint colour or palette for your home-improvement project may make you feel like you’re ready to head to the paint store. There’s still one more step to choosing your paint-the finish. Before you can break out the brushes and rollers, you’ll need to know which paint finish is the best one for your project.

Matte/Flat: Flat paints (also called matte paints) have the least amount of shine. The paint provides more coverage than any other type of paint, and it requires fewer coats to cover imperfections They’re great for covering, but they’re not the strongest kind of paint. If cleaned with cleaner, they will be damaged, so they’re best used in low-traffic areas, like dining rooms, and on surfaces that won’t be touched often, be touched much, like ceilings.

A popular paint finish is eggshell:  They’re slightly more lustrous than flat paints (with an eggshell sheen), but they still cover imperfections, and they’re more durable than flat finishes (though still not as durable as satin or gloss finishes). Eggshell paints are ideal for low-to-medium traffic areas, such as living rooms, hallways, and entryways.

Satin: Satin is the most common finish for interior paint. Their velvety sheen and ease of cleaning make them a great choice for high-traffic areas like kitchens, playrooms, family rooms, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. (Before you use a satin paint, be aware that its sheen can often reveal brush strokes, making touch-ups a bit troublesome.)

Semi-Gloss: Paints that are semi-gloss are shiny and reflect light. They’re extremely durable and mildew-resistant, so they’re best used in rooms that get a lot of traffic or moisture, such as kids’ rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. And they’re perfect for trim, too. As they have a glossier finish, they will show imperfections more than less shiny paints.

High-Gloss: A high-gloss paint finish is the shiniest of them all. Also, they can handle daily scrubbing since they are durable and washable. These paints are perfect for doors, trim, and cabinets. In addition to being an interior paint, high-gloss can also be used outdoors, on things like shutters. If applied incorrectly, this finish can show many imperfections. Preparation is therefore essential.
